Nylund never dreamed he would write anything except lab reports and scientific papers. He received his Bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his Masters degree from the University of California at San Diego, and had advanced to candidacy for his PhD… and then one day he read a novel by a much cherished author. He threw the book down and said the fateful words: ""How hard could this be?""

He sequestered himself in the library and read over two hundred ""how-to write"" books and then experimentally wrote 40,000 words of a novel that was pretty bad before he backed up, started over, and tried again. The result of that ""experiment"" was the contemporary fantasy novel, Pawn's Dream.

Nylund went to the prestigious Clarion West Writers' Workshop in 1994, and then decided to leave graduate school, abandoning a stable career in science, and become a destitute writer.

After publishing more novels and becoming a successful mid-list author, he learned that the living-just-above-the-poverty-level-starving-writer thing was no longer as romantic as it had seemed a few year before. So, he got a day job at Microsoft, first at their Encarta Encyclopedia, and later hired on to Microsoft's still-young Game Studios.

In the beginning, most writers working on video games had to be content with writing game manuals and the ""read me"" files that tell you to install new drivers for your computer video card to get the game working properly, but this soon evolved into helping game developers writer better dialog, better scripts, better games, and then creating huge story arcs to help build blocker buster, billion-dollar game franchises.

As a writer and story consultant for Microsoft Game Studios, Eric Nylund has been instrumental in developing and maintaining game franchises such as Halo and Gears of War. He has helped shape the intellectual property for some of the world's best videogame developers including Bioware, Ensemble Studios, and Epic Games.

Dit is echt een dik boek, en ik bedoel dik. Ik zit nu ergens op de helft en ik kan zeggen dat als je de andere boeken hebt gelezen dat Essential tale een must have is. Elke verhaal vult een gebeurtenis in die voorkwam in de andere boeken en/of delen in het spel. Nog een pluspunt is dat het allemaal kleine verhalen zijn met andere perspectieven, andere ervaringen en elke keer word je meegenomen naar een gebeurtenis wat het universum van Halo nog meer in het licht zet. Als je van sci-fi houdt/de andere boeken hebt gelezen/nieuwsgierig bent dan zou ik Halo evolutions kopen... Wil je alleen Brutes neer maaien en noobs teabaggen dan is dit niet an jouw besteed. het is echt iets voor de liefhebber

Deze box is een fantastische aanwinst voor iedere Halo fan, en voor iedereen die van Sci-Fi verhalen houdt. Een lage prijs voor 3 goede boeken. Persoonlijk is 'Fall of Reach' het enige boek uit de hele serie dat je ECHT gelezen moet hebben. First strike is ook erg goed. The Flood vind ik wat minder. Het is gebaseerd op het eerste spel (halo Combat Evolved), maar is wel wat uitgebreider.

Een must-have voor de Halo fan!

Deze geweldige boekenset is een zekere aanrader voor de Halo fans! Het spel biedt te weinig diepgang in het verhaal, naar mijn idee. En de boeken spelen hier fantastisch op in. We krijgen steeds iets meer te weten over dat mysterieuze figuur Master Chief. Maar het boek gaat natuurlijk niet alleen over hem, maar ook over zijn kameraden en hun gevaarlijke missies. Het is een musthave voor de Halo fan, maar het leest helaas niet zo makkelijk weg en soms is het zelfs een beetje saai. Maar voor de rest zijn het geweldige boeken. Al helemaal voor deze prijs! Als je na deze boeken nog meer wil lezen over Halo universum, zijn er nog een aantal boeken na deze set uitgekomen die zeker ook de moeite waard zijn! En er zijn er nog meer in de maak. Dus dat belooft veel goeds voor de toekomst.

Leuke uitbreiding aan de Halo "lore"

Voorspelbaar plot

Voor een Halo-fan een goed boek, al zal het niet voor iedereen zijn. Voor de 2ehands prijs hoef je het niet te laten echter ook als je minder bekend met de gameserie bent :) Enige minpunt was dat ik de pagina's redelijk donker gedrukt vindt en dat de rug van het boek wel erg versleten was. Dat eerste is gewoon hoe het gedrukt is, het tweede vond ik versus de geclaimde conditie van het boek door de verkoper wel wat minder.
