The Eagle series richt zich op twee hoofdpersonen, Quintus Licinius Cato en Lucius Cornelius Macro. Beide karakters zijn Romeinse soldaten. Macro, een veteraan die al meer dan 15 jaar in dienst is van het Romeinse Leger, is onlangs benoemd tot Centurionaat aan het begin van de serie. Cato is dan nog een tiener die opgroeide als slaaf in het keizerlijk paleis en wordt de Optio van Marco. De serie start in 42 voor Christus en gaat in over wat deze twee soldaten meemaken op hun tochten en gevechten in Germanië en Brittannië.
Simon Scarrow haalde zijn master aan de University of East Angelia. Daarna ging hij werken aan de Inland Renvenue en werd later leraar aan de City College Norwich. De broer van Simon, Alex Scarrow, is ook een schrijver van verschillende titels maar richt zich op het young adult sciencefiction genre. Zijn andere broer Scott is een compliance officer in Londen. The Roman Empire's hold on the province of Britannia is fragile. The tribes implacably opposed to Rome have grown cunning in their attacks on the legions. Even amongst those who have sworn loyalty, dissent simmers. In distant Rome, Nero is blind to the danger.
As hostilities create mayhem in the west, Governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus gathers a vast army, with Prefect Cato in command. A hero of countless battles, Cato wants his loyal comrade Centurion Macro by his side. But the Governor leaves Macro behind, in charge of the veteran reserves in Camulodunum. Suetonius dismisses concerns that the poorly fortified colony will be vulnerable to attack when only a skeleton force remains.
With the military distracted, slow-burning anger amongst the tribespeople bursts into flames. The king of the Iceni is dead and a proud kingdom is set for plundering and annexation. But the widow is Queen Boudica, a woman with a warrior's heart. If Boudica calls for death to the emperor, a bloodbath will follow.
Macro and Cato each face deadly battles against enemies who would rather die than succumb to Roman rule. The future of Britannia hangs in the balance.

Ook dit boek is weer lezenswaardig, en eigenlijk eerste deel van de Boudica opstand, volgende deel zal waarschijnlijk verder gaan met de opstand can Boudica. Wat mij betreft zijn gevechtscenes veel te lang en wordt wat vermoeiend maar verder weer goede aanvulling.
