The Codex Alera: Book Six

The Vord have started their final all-out attack on what remains of the Aleran armed forces that have entrenched themselves in the Calderon Valley. While the Realm of Alera is being overrun by the Vord Tavi has landed on the other side of the continent with the human and Canim elite forces. Will Tavi make it in time for there to be anything left to save? ‘First Lord’s Fury’ is the last part of the ‘Codex Alera’ series. This is where all the seeds that have been planted in previous books come to full blossom. There is no more holding back! Here we finally get it all, all the awesome powers of the High Ladies, High Lords and the First Lord combined against a Vord threat that has become hopelessly overwhelming. ‘First Lord’s Fury’ is not only spectacular, but it also offers some very welcome deepening of the story and characters. One way that this is brought about is by some tough decisions with which Tavi finds himself confronted. The way that he deals with those is more convincing than what we’ve seen in the series so far, changing him into a more multi-layered character. Something else that works really well is the development of the personality of the Vord Queen. While we are introduced to her thought processes we get to know that even though she may be a monster she has her own torments and motivations as well. As a result sympathy (of sorts) is created for her and she becomes the most discerning and worked-out villain of the series. These things really help to strengthen the story making this a truly consuming novel. All in all this is an exhilarating and deserving conclusion to the ‘Codex Alera’ bringing the tale to the expected good ending. Like the series as a whole ‘First Lord’s Fury’ is not innovative, but an absolutely fantastic read nonetheless!

Heel erg action packed vanuit verschillende gezichtspunten.
